What Masakhe does

MASAKHE (Xhosa: We build) is a community self-empowerment organisation in Nyanga East and Lower Crossroads.

MASAKHE has emerged as a response to our difficult economic situation in the townships. There are not enough jobs for people and unemployment is very high. We came together as concerned community members and decided to form an organisation to help ourselves and many others who are desperately looking for income. Our organisation was registered as a NPO in February 2011.

Many of our members are young women and men who have arrived in Cape Town from the Eastern Cape. They were dreaming about a job in Cape Town and they now realise that there are no jobs. Many young women have matric but no skills. Others are young mothers who have dropped out of school and feel ashamed.

Our aim is therefore to instill our members with a sense of self-worth, self-respect, dignity and hope for a future.

We aim to help our members find employment and a steady income . To have an income and a daily task gives a person dignity. We are particularly concerned about our youth since without a job it is easy for them to drift into the world of alcohol and fall prey to drug dealers.

We aim to improve the English of our members as many have arrived from rural areas and struggle to communicate in English. Without English, they cannot apply for jobs such as a gardener or housekeeper.

In order to achieve our vision, we have a management team of six volunteers who steer the project and are responsible for initiating programs.

A Special Message From Our Director

My name is Precious Petros from Masakhe Community Development Programme in Nyanga East Cape Town. I dont know what i am scared about-the - the threat of Corona virus or seeing children and families go hungry duribg the lockdown. Thats because before the crisis our Edu-care and Skills development programme was providing nutritious meals to 200children and young people every day and 15volunteer members. ....

Support Groups

We have various support groups meeting in private homes. Many members are HIV positive mothers who encourage each other in adhering to their ARV treatment. We also have grandmothers looking after orphaned children who meet to create handwork. The groups need help for funds to buy beads or wool for crocheting and knitting.

Education Projects

Reading programs

Volunteers of Masakhe assist a reading program that operates every Wednesday at Walter Teka Primary School in Nyanga. Volunteers from SHAWCO (University of Cape Town) and Masakhe read with the children with the aim to foster a love for literacy among Foundation Phase learners.

Masakhe runs an independent reading club on Saturday mornings from a garage of one of the members. The group is extremely popular and draws large groups of children who want to read and engage with language activities.

Educare Centres

Masakhe runs two Educare Centres in Delft and Lower Crossroads. The aim is to educate our children from a young age so that they are well prepared for primary school. We tell stories in English and Xhosa and do activities with pencils and colouring.

Handwork Projects

Sewing group

A number of women bring their sewing machines to private home of Masakhe members and sew garments and useful items like bags. We are looking for professionals to help with skills development and marketing.

Bead work group

A group of young women produce bead work and other handcraft. We are looking for assistance in accessing markets, perhaps overseas where we can sell our craft.
